About Suðurland Lighthouses Lighthouse
A 12.5-meter cylindrical masonry tower, painted red, stands on a small island near a cape about 20 km south of Fagurhólsmýri, Iceland. This islet has connections to Ingólfur Arnarson, the first Norse settler. The current tower was constructed in 1948, succeeding an earlier station established in 1916. It projects a white light, characterized by two flashes every 10 seconds (Fl W 10s). The light's focal height reaches 79 meters, offering a geographic range of 22.5 nautical miles. Access to the site is permitted, but the tower itself is not open.
Why it matters: The lighthouse serves as a navigation aid for vessels approaching a cape and its adjacent waters, assisting navigation along Iceland's southern coastline. Its placement on an islet linked to the first Norse settler adds historical and cultural value to the location.
