About Raufarhöfn Lighthouse
Constructed in 1931, the Raufarhöfn Lighthouse is a 10-meter cylindrical concrete tower painted yellow with a red lantern room. It stands on the eastern side of the Raufarhöfn harbor entrance in Iceland's northeastern region. The lighthouse emits three white, red, or green flashes every 20 seconds from a focal height of 33 meters, with a geographic range of nearly 16 nautical miles. This facility guides vessels entering the harbor of its namesake fishing town. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is indispensable for fishing vessels and other maritime traffic navigating the entrance to Raufarhöfn harbor. Its multi-color flash characteristic provides tailored guidance depending on the approach angle, ensuring safe passage into the port.
