About Puysegur Point Lighthouse
First lit in 1943, the Puysegur Point Lighthouse stands on a 5-meter octagonal concrete pedestal. This structure supports a lantern that was relocated from Godley Head. The light emits a white flash every 12 seconds, visible for 17.9 nautical miles. The station was taken out of service in 1980, then resumed operation in 1987. The initial Fresnel lens was exchanged in 1996. Work to repair the lantern was finished between 2018 and 2022. Visitors may access the site, but the tower is not open.
Why it matters: This navigation aid marks the southwestern tip of New Zealand, offering direction for ships navigating a remote, rocky coastline.
