About Ponta das Conchas Lighthouse
Also known as: Ponta das Conchas (Ilha do Mel)
The Ponta das Conchas lighthouse was established in 1872 as one of nine cast iron towers prefabricated in Scotland for Brazil's coast. Standing 18 meters tall, this cylindrical structure is painted white and features a lantern and gallery. It emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 21 nautical miles. The tower is situated atop a steep headland on the northeastern tip of Ilha do Mel, at the mouth of the Baía de Paranaguá. Its most recent maintenance included a repaint in 2023. Although the tower is not open to the public, the site is accessible via a hiking trail.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is significant for maritime traffic entering and exiting the Baía de Paranaguá and represents an early era of prefabricated cast iron lighthouse engineering in Brazil.
