The Pedra do Sal Lighthouse is an octagonal white concrete tower, 14 meters in height, topped with a gallery. Its light is situated 15 meters above the sea. The present tower dates from 1973, succeeding an earlier light first activated in 1873. Positioned on a rocky point north of Parnaíba, it sits about 10 kilometers southeast of the main Rio Parnaíba outlet. The light produces a white flash every six seconds, with a geographic range of 11.9 nautical miles. To prevent damage, a protective wall was erected around the structure in December 2007.
