Peba Lighthouse

Fl White 15s🇧🇷Barra dos Coqueiros, BROperational

Also known as: Peba (São Francisco do Norte, Cabeço)

The Peba lighthouse was constructed in 1856 as an octagonal tower with a lantern and gallery, standing 16 meters tall with a focal height of 45 meters. Originally situated in the village of Cabeço on the south bank of the Rio São Francisco, the lighthouse now stands in the water. This dramatic change occurred after severe beach erosion in the late 1990s submerged the village. The structure began to lean significantly, showing a 10-degree tilt by 2010 and a 25-degree tilt by 2017. Despite its precarious condition, it remains operational, emitting a white flash every 15 seconds, and is visible for nearly 18 nautical miles. Access to the site is only possible by boat, and the tower itself is closed to the public.

Why it matters: The Peba lighthouse is a stark symbol of environmental change, illustrating the profound impact of rapid beach erosion and human intervention on coastal landscapes.
