About Oryukdo Lighthouse
This concrete lighthouse, standing 28 meters tall, was first lit in 1937. The current structure, a cylindrical white tower with a lantern and gallery, rises from a three-story keeper's house and was completed in 1999. It is situated on Deungdaeseom, the southernmost of the Oryukdo islets, a chain of five to six islets east of Busan harbor's entrance. The light emits a single white flash every 10 seconds from a focal height of 53 meters, with a geographic range of 19.1 nautical miles. The lighthouse is located about 4 kilometers from the nearest port, Busan.
Why it matters: This light is essential for maritime traffic entering or leaving Busan harbor, one of South Korea's major ports. Its position on the Oryukdo islets marks a significant navigational point for vessels.
