About Kópasker Lighthouse
Also known as: Kópasker (Grimshafnartangi)
Built in 1951, this 14-meter concrete tower was first illuminated the same year. The structure is white with narrow black vertical stripes, and the lantern is painted red. It is a cylindrical tower with a lantern and gallery, its light positioned at a focal height of 21 meters. The lighthouse produces a directional white, red, and green light with a 20-second cycle. It stands on a headland marking the north access to the harbor of Kópasker, located on Iceland's northeastern peninsula between Öxarfjörður and Melrakkaslétta.
Why it matters: The Kópasker lighthouse serves as a navigation aid for fishing boats and other vessels approaching the harbor of Kópasker, a main port on Öxarfjörður. Its directional illumination assists in guiding craft through the harbor entrance, enhancing maritime security in an area with difficult coastal conditions.
