About Hvanney Lighthouse
Also known as: Hvanney (Höfn)
Built in 1922, the Hvanney Lighthouse is an 8-meter tall cylindrical concrete tower. It is painted yellow and topped with a red lantern. The structure was heightened in 1938 to improve its visibility. Its light flashes white, red, and green every 5 seconds, with a focal height of 15 meters, providing a geographic range of 11.9 nautical miles. The lighthouse is situated on a barrier island off Iceland's southeast coast, marking the south side of the Hornafjörður lagoon entrance, approximately 1.5 km south of Höfn. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is critical for safe passage into the Hornafjörður lagoon, marking a challenging navigational point at the lagoon's entrance.
