About Hafnarfjörður Lighthouse
Also known as: Hafnarfjörður (Range Rear)
Built in 1901, this cylindrical lighthouse stands 6 meters tall on a hill overlooking Hafnarfjörður's harbor. The tower features distinct red and white horizontal bands and originally housed its light within a square window at the top. It was part of an early system to guide vessels into port, though its original front light was deactivated and demolished in 1931. The lighthouse itself ceased operations in 1979. Despite no longer being active, the structure has been preserved and is recognized as a historical monument. Visitors can access the site, but the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: Recognized as a historical monument, this lighthouse preserves a tangible link to Hafnarfjörður's maritime past and the evolution of its port infrastructure.
