Gerogompos Lighthouse

Fl (2) White 15s🇬🇷Paliki Municipal Unit, GROperational

Also known as: Gerogompos (Ákra Yerogómbos)

The Gerogompos Lighthouse is situated on a promontory at the southwestern extremity of Kefalloniá, an island in the Ionian Sea, Greece. This cylindrical masonry tower, standing 13 meters tall, was first lit in 1907. The original structure was destroyed by retreating German troops during World War II and subsequently rebuilt in 1947 using the same architectural plans. Its lantern dome is gray metallic, contrasting with the white tower. The lighthouse emits two white flashes every 15 seconds, visible for 19.8 nautical miles. The lighthouse complex includes a 1-story keeper's house to which the tower is attached.

Why it matters: Rebuilt in 1947 to its original 1907 design after wartime destruction, the lighthouse guides vessels around the southwestern tip of Kefalloniá.
