The Cayo Culebra light is located on the north side of the island, about 8 kilometers south-southeast of Punta Allen in Bahía de la Ascensión. The present 12-meter-high, square pyramidal skeletal tower succeeded a concrete structure that disappeared due to erosion or a storm prior to 2015. This marker produces a single white flash every 12 seconds, with the light source at a height of 14 meters. Its visibility extends 11.6 nautical miles. This structure is situated in Mexico's Quintana Roo region, indicating this isolated island position.
Why it matters: This light provides navigation assistance for Bahía de la Ascensión, directing ships through the complex channels of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve and aiding them in bypassing dangers in this distant coastal area.
