About Al Ikhwān Lighthouse
Also known as: Al Ikhwān (Akhaween, The Brothers)
Constructed in 1883, Al Ikhwān lighthouse is a round, stone tower standing 31 meters tall. It is situated on a 400-meter-long rocky island in the Red Sea, approximately 65 kilometers east of Al-Qusayr. The lighthouse emits a single white flash every 5 seconds from its focal height of 36 meters, with a geographic range of 16.4 nautical miles. Refurbished in 1993, the structure includes a lantern and gallery. The island is part of Egypt's Red Sea Marine Park and is operated by the Egyptian Navy.
Why it matters: The enduring operation of Al Ikhwān lighthouse, including its original Chance Brothers Fresnel lens, highlights a unique preservation of historical lighthouse technology. Its location within Egypt's Red Sea Marine Park also makes it a point of interest for eco-tourism and heritage appreciation.
