Somali Pirates Kill 5 Crew on MT Honour 25
AI illustrationSeptember 30. Puntland Maritime Police Force boarded the MT Honour 25 off Somalia's coast and captured 16 pirates. Five crew members were dead before the operation ended.
The tanker, flagged in Palau, was seized on April 22 roughly 30 nautical miles from Mogadishu. Pirates held 17 crew for five months and demanded $3 million in ransom. Ten were Pakistani nationals. The other seven came from Indonesia, India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
When Puntland forces moved in, the gunmen opened fire. Three Pakistani crew members died, along with one Indian sailor and one from Myanmar. Four others were wounded. The deaths marked the first piracy-related crew killings in more than a decade.
The day before, Basra tribesmen freed a tanker from Somali pirates. Five days earlier, the Sibu 1 was freed after more than a month in pirates' hands.
All 16 captured pirates were handed over to Puntland authorities.
