Iran Says Hormuz Reopening Rests on Washington After No US Response to Seven-Day Offer

Iran told Washington on Saturday that the decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is in American hands, after no formal US response arrived to its conditional seven-day offer. Senior Iranian officials said the proposal remains on the table but will not stay open indefinitely.

The offer, announced last week, would reopen the strait within seven days if the US lifted its naval blockade of Iranian ports and removed the sanctions reimposed in March. Iran said Washington had yet to engage with those conditions and that the choice of whether to restore commercial traffic through the chokepoint now falls to the United States.

The blockade has now lasted five weeks. Transit counts fell to just four crossings in a single day at the worst point this month, against typical daily traffic of around 20 to 25 tankers. IRGC enforcement has continued throughout. Last week the IRGC struck at least three tankers that attempted the crossing. The attacks pushed most remaining operators to reroute shipments around the Arabian Peninsula.

US officials made no public statement on the Iranian deadline. Oil markets and shipping operators are watching Washington for any indication of whether talks will begin or the closure will extend into October.
