Aug 15. A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck in the sea off the north coast of Flores Island, eastern Indonesia, at roughly 10 km depth. The epicentre was about 68 km north-northwest of Ende, in East Nusa Tenggara province.
Authorities issued a tsunami warning soon after the quake. Waves of up to 1.6 metres were recorded before the warning was lifted. More than 230 aftershocks followed, the strongest reaching M6.2.
By Aug 17, at least 68 people had died and 12,800 had been displaced. In Nagekeo regency, landslides blocked roads and slowed rescue teams. Workers were still searching through damaged structures that day.
Vessel traffic in the waters around Flores and East Nusa Tenggara rose sharply in the days after the quake as search and relief operations drew ships to the area.
