Cargo Ship LUTUF Seized by Armed Pirates off Somalia

Armed pirates seized the cargo ship LUTUF on August 17 off the Somali coast, the fifth successful boarding of a commercial vessel in the region since April 2026.

Eight pirates boarded the ship about 4 nautical miles south of Marraye, according to alerts from UK Maritime Trade Operations and the European Union Naval Force Somalia. Crew members were reported safe following the takeover. No distress call had been sent before the advisory went out.

Tracking activity on LUTUF jumped nine-fold on MarineRadar in the hours surrounding the incident, with nine unique devices checking its position in a 24-hour period against just one over the prior day. The jump placed it as the strongest vessel breakout on the platform that day.

Somali piracy returned in force earlier in 2026 after a quieter period. The LUTUF seizure pushes the confirmed tally to five successful boardings since April. Earlier attacks occurred further south near the Horn, but maritime security groups say activity is spreading toward the broader Gulf of Aden corridor.

UK MTIS and EU MSCIO have issued advisories urging ships in the area to keep full anti-piracy watches, report any suspicious approach, and follow the latest guidance from maritime security organisations.
