CMA CGM Declares General Average on Petra After Malacca Fire
AI illustrationThree weeks after a fire broke out on the containership CMA CGM Petra in the Strait of Malacca, CMA CGM declared General Average on 15 September 2026. Cargo interests must now provide security before their containers can be released.
The fire aboard CMA CGM Petra started on 23 August 2026. The 8,000-TEU ship, built in 2024, was anchored near Penang and then towed to Port Klang, Malaysia, where about 450 containers were offloaded for inspection. No crew were injured.
WK Webster has been appointed to assist cargo interests with security arrangements. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
The incident occurred on a major shipping route: Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore recently pledged to keep the Strait of Malacca open and safe. Separately, CMA CGM's wider port network is expanding through its $434 million commitment to a new Jeddah terminal; that investment is distinct from the Petra cargo-release process.
