Kommunen består av flere øyer og holmer. Øyene i kommunen er bundet sammen av flere broer, f.eks. Bømlabrua. Øyene i nord og i øst tilhører kommunene Austevoll, Fitjar og Stord. Fastlandsområdene på andre siden av Bømlafjorden i sørøst tilhører Sveio kommune.
