Background
Wanne-Eickel war eine kreisfreie Stadt im nördlichen Ruhrgebiet, die in dieser Form von 1926 bis 1974 existierte. Im Rahmen des Ruhrgebiet-Gesetzes wurde sie mit Wirkung zum 1. Januar 1975 mit der kreisfreien Stadt Herne zusammengeschlossen. Die Kreisfreiheit erhielt Wanne-Eickel 1926 als Stadtkreis, von 1955 bis 1970 war sie Großstadt. Bis zum Zusammenschluss mit Herne hatte Wanne-Eickel die größte statistische Bevölkerungsdichte aller deutschen Städte; auf einer Fläche von 21,31 km² betrug diese im Dezember 1965 etwa 5100 Einwohner je km².
