About Ytre Møkkalasset Lighthouse
Also known as: Ytre Møkkalasset (Tvedestrand)
This stone and cast iron lighthouse, standing 17 meters tall, was built in 1888 on a skerry near the entrance to Sandøyfjord, southeast of Kilsund. Its tower is cylindrical, painted red with a single narrow white horizontal band. Damaged during World War II, repairs after the conflict involved reducing the lantern's size. The light was deactivated in 1986, but following a restoration by Møkkalassets Venner and Kystverket between 2020 and 2021, it was reactivated in September 2021. The lighthouse exhibits a white, red, and green light with a cycle of 6 seconds.
Why it matters: The lighthouse guides vessels into the Sandøyfjord, and its recent restoration highlights its cultural value as a symbol of maritime history.
