About Yokosuka Northeast Breakwater Lighthouse
This square concrete tower, standing 18 meters tall, is painted red and is situated on a breakwater protecting Yokosuka harbor from northerly winds. Its structure includes a lantern and gallery, attached to a complex of 1- and 2-story concrete buildings. The lighthouse emits a red light that flashes every three seconds, with a focal plane 20 meters above the water, visible for 13.2 nautical miles. Accessible only by boat, the tower and its site are closed to the public. It marks the eastern extent of a substantial breakwater, much of which lies submerged.
Why it matters: This lighthouse warns vessels of the presence and extent of the submerged breakwater, guiding them safely into Yokosuka harbor, a major naval and commercial port.
