The Whale Rock Lighthouse was constructed in 1882 and first lit in the same year. This sparkplug lighthouse marked Whale Rock, an island situated at the entrance to the West Passage of Narragansett Bay. The area around the rock was known to be dangerous for navigation. The lighthouse is no longer operational. Its function has been superseded by the Whale Rock Lighted Gong Buoy 3.
