About Westhaver Island Lighthouse
The lighthouse on Westhaver Island stands as a modern fiberglass tower, built in 1985 and standing 7.5 meters tall. Its design features a cylindrical shape, painted white with a red band encircling the upper section. The light emits a single white flash every 4 seconds, visible for over 10 nautical miles. The site has a history dating back to 1882, with several structures serving the purpose over the years. Previous lights were housed in a lighthouse structure that burned in 1887, followed by a mast light, a new lighthouse in 1896, and a skeletal tower from 1948 before the current tower was established.
Why it matters: This light marks the entrance to Mahone Harbour, assisting vessels navigating the northwestern corner of Mahone Bay.
