West Chop Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About West Chop Lighthouse
The West Chop Light stands 14 meters tall, with its focal plane at 25.5 meters above sea level. This brick lighthouse was constructed and first lit in 1891, replacing an earlier rubblestone structure built in 1817. The original lighthouse had undergone several relocations due to erosion before the current tower was erected. It emits a white and red light, serving the entrance to Vineyard Haven Harbor in Tisbury, Massachusetts. The station's original Fresnel lens remains in operation.
Why it matters: This lighthouse station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and was the last lighthouse on Martha's Vineyard to be automated.
