About West Arnhem Shire Lighthouses Lighthouse
This cylindrical concrete tower, standing 36 meters tall on an octagonal base, was built and first lit in 1917. It is located on the western tip of the Cobourg Peninsula, marking the entry to the Dundas Strait and Van Diemen Gulf. The lighthouse exhibits a white light with a characteristic of one white flash every 10 seconds, visible for nearly 19 nautical miles. Its original Fresnel lens was recovered in 2005 and later donated to the Queensland Maritime Museum. The former keeper's residences have been repurposed, though the tower itself remains inaccessible to the public.
