About Walton Harbour Lighthouse
Built in 1872, the Walton Harbour Lighthouse is a square pyramidal wood tower standing 8.5 meters tall. It is painted white with red trim and features a lantern and gallery. This structure served mariners navigating the Minas Basin until its operational service ended in 1978. In 1991, the Municipality of East Hants acquired the lighthouse and restored it as a historical museum. The building was moved 45 meters inland in 2024 to prevent erosion.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is preserved as a piece of maritime history and now functions as a museum. Its recent relocation highlights the challenges of coastal erosion impacting historical structures.
