About Vestre Kvalen Lighthouse
Vestre Kvalen lighthouse marks the entrance to Jøssingfjord in Rogaland, Norway. The original structure was a 5-meter square skeletal tower covered with white siding, featuring a red lantern room and gallery. Its focal plane was 17 meters above sea level, and it displayed a red flashing light (Fl R 4s) with a 12.4 nautical mile geographic range. This steel tower was positioned on a cliff on the northwest side of the fjord. The original tower was replaced and removed in 2018; the site continues to operate with a new light.
Why it matters: The Vestre Kvalen light serves as a navigation aid for safe entry into Jøssingfjord, an important route for local maritime traffic. Its location helps vessels navigate the coastal geography to enter and exit this inlet.
