About Verrasundet Lighthouse
Also known as: Verrasundet (Værrasundet)
Verrasundet Lighthouse is a square skeletal tower, standing 6 meters tall and covered with siding, topped by a lantern and gallery. It is located on the north side of the Verrasund entrance, where it connects with the Beitstadfjord. The light emits two white flashes on an 8-second cycle, also showing red or green depending on the direction of approach. Its focal height is 5.5 meters, and it has a geographic range of 8.6 nautical miles. The lighthouse operates on a directional light system. Visitors can access the site, but the tower itself is closed to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is indispensable for vessels navigating the narrow entrance to the Verrasund from the Beitstadfjord, a critical passage for local shipping and recreational craft. Its directional light, changing color based on approach, provides precise guidance for avoiding shoals in the complex local geography.
