Location & Light Range
About Varnes Lighthouse
The Varnes lighthouse is a square pyramidal tower with a lantern and gallery, standing 6 meters tall. Its focal height reaches 30 meters above sea level. Originally established in 1836, the current structure was built in 1950 to replace the initial light station, the ruins of which are still present. It displays a white, red, and green light that flashes white every 10 seconds. The lighthouse is situated off highway 654, approximately 10 km north of Lista Fyr, marking the south side of the Listafjord entrance near Farsund.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for guiding vessels safely into the Listafjord, marking the critical southern side of its entrance. Its position, with the modern light standing beside the ruins of its predecessor, offers a compelling historical narrative alongside its practical function.
