Location & Light Range
About Ushimado Kō Lighthouse
A cylindrical white concrete tower, 11 meters tall, stands on a rocky point on Maejima island. This structure, featuring a small gallery, was built and first lit in 1971. It emits a white light with a characteristic of a fixed white light followed by a flash every 3 seconds. The focal height of the light is 13 meters, and it can be seen for 11.3 nautical miles. Located on the northwest side of the island, it shelters the harbor of Ushimado, approximately 1 kilometer east of the town's waterfront. While the grounds are open to visitors, the tower itself is closed to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for guiding local fishing fleets and recreational boaters into the sheltered port of Ushimado, particularly through the intricate channels around Maejima island within the Seto Inland Sea.
