About Ushimado Lighthouse
This square lighthouse, constructed from stone and wood, stands 12 meters high. Its design features a traditional wooden tower with a pyramidal roof, which is mounted on a square stone pedestal. The lighthouse is situated at the waterfront, marking the entrance to Ushimado harbor in Setouchi, Okayama Prefecture. Although no longer operational, the site is open to the public, providing views of the harbor. The tower itself is closed to entry.
Why it matters: The lighthouse serves as a tangible connection to Ushimado's maritime history, having once guided ships into the harbor. Its well-preserved traditional architecture offers a notable example of early Japanese navigational aids.
