About Uryū Saki Lighthouse
This concrete lighthouse, built in 1968, stands 10.5 meters tall on a sharp promontory on the northeast coast of Amakusa Kami Shima. Its round, cylindrical tower is attached to a 1-story equipment room. The light emits an isophase white flash on a 6-second cycle from a focal height of 37 meters, with a geographic range of 16.6 nautical miles. The operational lighthouse is located in Kamiamakusa, within Kumamoto Prefecture. While the site is open to visitors, the tower itself remains closed to the public.
Why it matters: The light warns mariners of the distinct headland, ensuring safer passage through the challenging waters around Amakusa Kami Shima and helping to prevent groundings.
