About Tusket River Lighthouse
Also known as: Tusket River (Big Fish Island)
A square wood tower, measuring 11 meters in height and painted white, is topped with a red roof. Situated on the southwest point of Big Fish Island, it marks the entrance to the Tusket River. The present structure, erected in 2019, is a replica of the original station established in 1864. The prior tower, built in 1962 and refurbished in 1995, had deteriorated. The current lighthouse displays a white light with a 10-second interval (Fl W 10s) from a focal height of 18.5 meters, visible for 12.8 nautical miles. The Canadian Coast Guard maintains this operational navigation aid.
Why it matters: This navigation aid marks the Tusket River entrance, assisting local fishing vessels and recreational boats. Its operational history, continuing with a replica since 1864, underscores its sustained contribution to maritime safety in the region.
