About Turkey Point Lighthouse
Turkey Point Lighthouse, constructed in 1833, stands 11.5 meters tall with a focal height of 39 meters. Its white tower displays a white light. The lighthouse is situated on bluffs that are 100 feet high, making its light appear from the water at the third highest elevation in the Chesapeake Bay. Originally lit in 1833, the station is no longer operational.
Why it matters: This site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized for the significant number of women who served as its keepers.
Background
The Turkey Point Light is a historic lighthouse at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. Although only a 35-foot (11 m) tower, the 100-foot (30 m) height of the bluffs on which it stands makes it the third highest light off the water in the bay.
