Tanjung Layar (Ujung Kulon, First Point) {Eerste Punt, Oedjoeng Koelon} Lighthouse

Constructed in 1906, the Tanjung Layar lighthouse is a square metal framework tower standing 16 meters tall. Painted black, or sometimes appearing rusted, it marks the southwesternmost point of Java. The lighthouse was erected following damage to its predecessor by an earthquake that same year. Its purpose is to guide vessels entering the Sunda Strait from the Indian Ocean. The nearest port, Bandar Lampung, is situated approximately 61.7 kilometers away.

Why it matters: This light warns ships of Java's extreme southwestern tip, a significant navigational hazard when approaching the Sunda Strait from the Indian Ocean.
