About Strømtangen Lighthouse
Also known as: Strømtangen (Torgauten)
Built in 1859, Strømtangen Lighthouse is a 7-meter red lantern room at ground level, attached to a white, two-story keeper's house with a red stripe. The wooden structure is located on a small island off the rocky peninsula near Fredrikstad. It marks the eastern side of the Oslofjord, guiding ships into the western harbor. The lighthouse ceased operations in 1977 after more than a century of service. The property is now leased and maintained by the Onsøybeviset association, which has converted the keeper's house into accommodation.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was essential for maritime traffic entering and exiting Fredrikstad's western harbor. It now has cultural significance as a unique overnight accommodation, allowing public engagement with its heritage.
