About Spårö Lighthouse
Also known as: Spårö (Common Rear)
The Spårö lighthouse stands on the southeastern point of Spårö island, marking the approach to Västervik. The current cylindrical concrete tower, built in 1934, replaced an octagonal wooden lighthouse from 1884. This structure stands 8 meters tall, with its light positioned 36 meters above sea level. It emits an occluded white light that flashes every 6 seconds, visible for 16.4 nautical miles. The lighthouse station was first established in 1777, predating the current tower by over a century. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself is not accessible.
Why it matters: Spårö is essential for safe navigation into Västervik harbor. It also serves as the rear light for the Idö Stangskär Range and the Stickskär Range, directing vessels through specific channels.
