Southeast Shoal Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Southeast Shoal Lighthouse
This square, 18-meter concrete lighthouse stands on a pyramidal base, marking the southern edge of shoals extending from Point Pelee into Lake Erie's Pelee Passage. Built in 1927, it replaced earlier lightship stations. The structure, painted white with red trim, features a 3-story building topped by a helicopter landing pad instead of a lantern. On July 7, 1950, a severe explosion and fire gutted the building. The lighthouse maintains a geographic range of 13.4 nautical miles with a red light showing one flash every 10 seconds.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is indispensable for ships traversing Lake Erie, guiding them through the main channel and warning of dangerous shoals extending from Point Pelee. Its unique conversion to a helicopter landing pad reflects modern operational needs.
