About Soulanges Canal Upper Entrance Range Front Lighthouse
The Soulanges Canal Upper Entrance Range Front lighthouse was constructed in 1902 from cast iron. This white tower, standing 11 meters tall, originally featured a red, white, and blue paint scheme. It guided vessels at the western entrance to the Soulanges Canal near Les Coteaux. Operations ceased in 1960 when the canal closed. The structure was removed for restoration in 2022 and later returned, repainted white. The site is now open to the public, though the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: This cast iron tower guided mariners navigating the upper entrance of the Soulanges Canal on a pre-Seaway shipping route and is a distinctive landmark due to its restoration and original paint scheme.
