About Soulanges Canal Lower Entrance Range Rear Lighthouse
Also known as: Soulanges Canal Lower Entrance Range Rear (relocated)
This cast iron lighthouse was built in 1902 and stands 14 meters tall. The tower is painted white with a black lantern roof. It served as the rear range light for the lower entrance of the Soulanges Canal. The light was white and operated until 1960, when it was decommissioned due to the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Following its deactivation, the structure was restored and moved to Parc des Ancres in Pointe-des-Cascades. It was removed again for restoration in 2020 and returned in November of that year.
Why it matters: Its relocation and restoration highlight a community's dedication to preserving maritime heritage and serve as a reminder of canal transportation's engineering and navigational challenges.
