About Soulanges Canal Lower Entrance Range Front Lighthouse
Built in 1902, this cast iron structure measures 9 meters in height and is painted white. Its lantern roof is gray. The light was first activated in 1902, serving the eastern approach to the Soulanges Canal. Located in Pointe-des-Cascades at the end of the north pier, it indicated the meeting point of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Rivers. Its service ended in 1960, made unnecessary by the St. Lawrence Seaway. The grounds can be visited, but the tower is off-limits. Observations in 2023 found it in poor condition, and it is listed as endangered.
Why it matters: This light served as a navigation aid for the Soulanges Canal, a significant route prior to the St. Lawrence Seaway. Its current endangered designation points to the area's past industrial importance for shipping.
