Sod Rock Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Sod Rock Lighthouse
Built in 1870, Sod Rock Lighthouse is a tripod structure constructed from wood, standing 10.5 meters tall and topped with a lantern. It is located on the north side of an estuary approximately 8 kilometers east of Shannon International Airport in County Limerick. The lighthouse guided vessels navigating the waterways for over eighty years before becoming inactive in the 1950s. While the site is accessible to visitors, the tower itself remains closed to the public.
Why it matters: Its distinctive tripod wood tower is a less common architectural style for lighthouses. Though inactive, Sod Rock offers a tangible link to the region's maritime heritage.
