About Horse Rock Lighthouse
Also known as: #Horse Rock
Built in 1870, this wooden lighthouse stood 10.5 meters tall on piles near the north side of the Shannon estuary, close to Shannon International Airport. The structure featured a lantern and served as a navigational aid for decades after the station began operating in 1853. Its active service concluded in the 1950s. The lighthouse remained in place as a relic until February 12, 2014, when it was destroyed by the severe Storm Darwin. Only the remnants of its pilings remain at the site.
Why it matters: The dramatic destruction of the lighthouse by Storm Darwin in 2014 serves as a stark reminder of the powerful forces of nature and the vulnerability of coastal structures.
