Dursey Point Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Dursey Point Lighthouse
A cast iron tower, 31 meters high, was built in 1882 at the southwestern tip of Dursey Island, off Dursey Head at the northern entrance to Bantry Bay. This structure was destroyed by a violent storm on November 27, 1881, with its upper portion toppled by a wave. The station became inactive in 1889 and was later demolished. A temporary light, consisting of a lightship lantern on a small wooden building, had been erected on the site after the destruction of Calf Rock Light. Today, only the original stone enclosing wall remains.
Why it matters: This temporary light served as an essential navigational aid following the loss of Calf Rock Light, ensuring maritime safety during a critical period at the northern entrance to Bantry Bay.
