About Søndre Langåra Fog Bell Lighthouse
The Søndre Langåra Fog Bell Station, built in 1896, is a square, 7-meter tall wooden tower with an open enclosure for its bell. It stands at 14 meters focal height and has a geographic range of 11.6 nautical miles. This station, located near Nesodden at the northern end of Langåra island, was the only staffed fog signal in Norway without an accompanying lighthouse. It provided warnings for local waters near Frogn, guiding vessels through areas with potential hazards. The station ceased operations in 1967 after more than seventy years of service.
Why it matters: The station's unique role as Norway's only staffed fog signal without a lighthouse highlights a specific historical approach to maritime safety. Its Swiss-chalet style wooden tower is also a distinctive architectural feature.
