About Skjåholmen Lighthouse
First lit in 1856, this steel structure stands on the waterfront at Skrova, near Vågan in Norway's Nordland region. The current lighthouse features a 5-meter octagonal lantern and gallery mounted on black steel piles, with the lantern itself painted white and topped with a red roof. Its focal height is 11 meters above sea level. The light emits two white, red, or green flashes every 8 seconds, guiding vessels through local channels. The original lighthouse at this location was replaced by the Skrova lighthouse in 1922. The site is accessible to the public, but the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: The directional light's color changes are critical for guiding vessels through specific channels and around hazards near Skrova's waterfront. Its unique construction provides a distinctive architectural presence along the Norwegian coast.
