About Skansudde Lighthouse
Also known as: Skansudde (Västergarn)
The Skansudde light began operation in 1890, housed within a one-story wooden keeper's residence. Rather than a tower, the light was shone from a bay window integrated into the seaward side of the house. This design placed the light mechanism within the living quarters, allowing for direct attention from the keeper. The structure's original lantern room in the bay window has since been replaced by a modern equivalent. The station remained active for 46 years before being deactivated in 1936.
Why it matters: Skansudde is notable for its unconventional design, integrating the light directly into a keeper's house rather than a separate tower, offering insight into early economical coastal lighting methods.
