About Shimo Komaruko Shima Lighthouse
Also known as: Shimo Komaruko Shima (Simo Komaru Koshima)
Constructed in 1962, this 8.5m concrete post is joined to a square, single-story concrete equipment building. The entire white structure reaches 21m above sea level and emits a white flash each seven seconds. Located on an island between Hakata Shima and Uma Shima, north of Ōshima, its light is visible for 13.4 nautical miles. The lighthouse is 2.6km from Hakatashima, its closest harbor, and is currently active, assisting craft in this island-filled sea area.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the narrow passage between Hakata Shima and Uma Shima. Its regular white flash provides a navigation marker, helping to avoid grounding and collisions in a restricted passage that is important for regional commerce and fishing boats.
