A red, cylindrical concrete tower, 12 meters tall, was built in 1996 to serve as the Satsumasendai Harbor Lighthouse. The structure flares at its top and stands 18 meters above sea level. This lighthouse is situated at the end of a 2.5-kilometer breakwater on the north side of the Sendai River mouth. It emits a single red flash every 6 seconds, visible for 12.7 nautical miles. The site is accessible to the public, although the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse marks the end of the south breakwater, guiding vessels safely into Satsumasendai Harbor and past the mouth of the Sendai River.
